Social Security & you!

Reaching out to your local Social Security office either over the phone, in-person or online is your first step to getting your Medicare insurance plan.

If you are not already drawing from your Social Security four months before your birth month, and you want to sign up for Medicare, then three months before your 65th birthday, you have three options.

  1. You can walk into your local SS Office and enroll in Part A and Part B. OR
  2. You can go to ssa.gov and sign up for A & B. OR
  3. Your last option is to call your local Social Security office and make an appointment to enroll in Part A & B with Original Medicare.

**IMPORTANT** To get on a Medicare Advantage plan or Medicare Supplement plan you must have both A & B from Original Medicare. You even have to have Part A & B for TRICARE! So do not delay, if you want to pick up Medicare, when it's your time do so... Apply!

THIS INFORMATION IS FOR EDUCATION PURPOSES ONLY

Social Security (ssa.gov) and Medicare.gov are your primary resources for the information you need.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

After signing up for a Medicare plan and submitting the required forms to your local Social Security office, you will receive a letter stating you have a late enrollment penalty. To avoid the penalty, call the number on the letter and inform them that you have already submitted your credible coverage letters to Social Security. This step should have been completed before receiving the letter.

This page is for education purposes only.

If you are confused about what to do as your 65th birthday is coming up, don’t delay! The purpose of this page is to direct you where you need to go to get what you need before your 65th birthday month.
